"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help." Psalm 121:1
Alex Hopkins, Sr., “Popa”, a lifelong resident of Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2019. He was 74 years old. Mr. Hopkins served in the United States Army in which he was stationed in Germany with two years of active service, two years on stand by and two years enlisted in the Army Reserves. He later joined the Army National Guard Unit in Citronelle, Alabama. He was employed by Ciba Geigy, Alabama Dry Docks Shipbuilding and in the Searcy Hospital Maintenance Department. Mr. Hopkins was owner and operator of Hopkins Water Well Drilling and Repair Service for 48 years where he made many friends. He always kept his hand in the water business. Alex was humorous, with positive and kind words and he would strive to encourage others. His retirement consisted of spending time with his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his church family. He was an avid turkey and deer hunter, also loved wood working. He loved music and playing his guitar, but most of all, Mr. Hopkins loved beyond all things his Lord and Savior. He was senior deacon and founder of The S.H.O.P., that was located first in his shop. If you didn't know his Lord, you would when he left you. He had such a humbling love for his family and for his church. Alex was preceded in death by his father, Woodrow Hopkins; mother, Mattie Hopkins; sisters, Bertha Sullivan and Mildred Byrd; and brother, Homer Hopkins. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 53 years, Mildred Hopkins; children, Debra Weaver (Gary), Michael Massey (Shelby), Alex Hopkins, Jr. (Sarah), Danny Hopkins (Velma), and Anthony Byrd (Tammie); seventeen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; sister, Myrtle Weaver (Kesler, Sr.) and Maeola Taylor (Henry); special friends like brothers, Tyler Byrd, Otis Lister, and Joe Blankinchip; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A wake will be held for Alex from 6pm until 9pm Friday, January 18, 2019, at Simple House of Praise Church. The funeral will be at 2pm Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Simple House of Praise Church with Rev. Dean Hopkins, Rev. Ken Davis, Rev. Otis Lister, Rev. Greg Kirkwood, and Rev.
