Alice Young Shurden, age 96, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away on July 8, 2011. Born January 12, 1915 in Fairford, AL she was a life long resident of Calvert and Mount Vernon. A 1934 graduate of Citronelle High School she was retired from the Mobile County School System. She was the epitome of a southern lady. She was preceded in death by her husband, Obie Henry Shurden; her parents Reverend Calvert Bruce Young and Eugenia Parnell Young; two brothers, four sisters and her granddaughter, Alison Louise Funk. She is survived by three daughters: Sandra Shurden Majors, Daphne, AL; Maria Shurden Kennedy, Mobile, AL; and Margaret Shurden Williams, Daphne, AL. Five grandchildren: Thomas Joseph (Jeanne) Funk, Mobile, AL; Lori Funk (John) Spillers, Panama City Beach, FL; Stephanie Kennedy Williams, Mobile, AL; Cynthia Kennedy (Jason) Langston, Mobile, AL; and Ashley Williams (Aldon) Yelverton, Raleigh, NC. Ten great-grandchildren: Forrest Joseph Funk, Robert Taylor Sullivan, Kelsey Grace Spillers, Rachael Erin Funk, Elizabeth Wynn Tartt, Hampton Kennedy Langston, Ella Elizabeth Williams, Carson Kenneth Langston, Allie Grace Steel, Margaret Katherine Yelverton and other relatives and friends. She was the oldest living member of Calvert Baptist Church where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2011 with funeral services at the church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011. Burial will be in the Mount Vernon Community Cemetery. Thomas Joseph Funk, Jason Kenneth Langston, John Grady Spillers, Robert Taylor Sullivan, James Edward Taylor and George Aldon Yelverton, IV will serve as pallbearers.
