Charles Alger Merchant, Sr., 90, a native and resident of Turnerville, Alabama passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 6, 2019. Mr. Merchant honorably served and retired from the United States Army Air Corp. and the United States Air Force with 26 years of service. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from the State of Alabama Unemployment Compensation Office and enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. He loved history and was an avid reader. Charles loved farming and raising cattle. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Newton and Maude Opra Merchant; and sister, Deborah Merchant Fulkerson. Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 51 years, Catherine Merchant; three sons, Charles Alger Merchant, Jr. (Janet), Daniel Newton Merchant (Tambra) and Jason Scott Merchant (Corrie); three daughters, Linda Charlene Merchant Tate (Laurie), Theresa Ann Merchant Jordan (Troy) and Rachelle Diana Merchant Stannard (Mark); 17 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; three sisters, Eudelle Merchant Turner (Duane), Calliree Merchant Carney (Wendill), and Frances Merchant Lewis (Wendal); other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 11am until the 12 pm funeral service on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Turnerville Baptist Church with Bro. Mark Stannard officiating. Burial will follow in Turnerville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs, 1700 29th Ct S, Birmingham, AL 35209 or the Cleveland House 845 Norton Avenue, Saraland, Alabama 36571.
