Charles Derwood Cunningham, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on March 27, 2024 at the age of 89. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will forever be treasured by his family and friends.
Born on January 4, 1935, Charles led a remarkable life filled with love and dedication to his family. After serving in the Navy during the Korean War from 1953 to 1959, with his last duty being on the USS MIDWAY, Charles retired from Ciba Geigy as a maintenance technician in 1997. His dedication and hard work were evident in everything he did.
Described as funny, determined, and loving, Charles had a vibrant personality that lit up every room he entered. He had a passion for life that was infectious, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In his free time, Charles enjoyed pursuing various hobbies and interests. He was an avid golfer who found solace on the golf course, a devoted Alabama football fan who cheered passionately for his team, a great storyteller whose tales captivated audiences, and a skilled gardener who found joy in nurturing nature's beauty.
One of Charles's proudest accomplishments was his family. He is survived by his son, Greg Cunningham Sr. (Sissy); grandchildren, Greg Cunningham Jr. (Bayleigh), MareLouise Cunningham, and Turner Cunningham; great-granddaughter, Vivianne Louise; wife, Peggy Cunningham; siblings, Geraldine Scudder (Paul) and Kenneth Cunningham (Joyce); along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Charles is reunited in heaven with his parents, Derwood and Linnie Cunningham; and siblings, James Cunningham and Woodie Lee Mason. His memory will live on through the stories shared by those who knew him best.
A visitation to honor Charles's life will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Freeman Funeral Home from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:00 PM with Bro. Donnie Cunningham officiating. Veteran Salute will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery. These services are an opportunity for family and friends to come together to pay their respects and share fond memories of a remarkable man who touched so many lives.
Charles Derwood Cunningham's legacy of love and laughter will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to have known him. May he rest in peace knowing that he will always be remembered with fondness and admiration for the incredible person he was.
