Clara “MomMo” Byrd, 94, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family and friends. Miss Clara was a cook at Calcedeaver Elementary School for 44 years and known in the community as the Queen of Apple Brown Betty to this day no one can match her cooking of Brown Betty. She loved eating at Jordan’s Fish Camp. She was a lifelong member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where she served on various committees and enjoyed working every summer during Vacation Bible School. Her love of gardening can be seen in her yard and garden. “MomMo” was a Matriarch of the community and selflessly helped many people in need. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Vernon Byrd and her daughter, Ella Maeola Byrd. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Margaret T. McDonald, Douglas P. Byrd, Roland (Linda) Byrd, Anthony Dwight Byrd, James Nelson (Vera) Byrd and Pamela (Ricky) Frazier; brother, Robert Ellison Byrd; 13 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 27 great great grandchildren; 47 nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. A wake will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2015 from 6pm-9pm at Freeman Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held 11am, Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev. George A. Weaver, Rev. Dunford Cole and Rev. Greg Nobles officiating. Burial will follow at Byrd Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Alabama. Online register available at www.freemancitronelle.com.
