Dorothy Petcher Quimby

November 16, 1918 — October 21, 2018

Dorothy Petcher Quimby, age 99, passed away peacefully at her home on October 21, 2018. She was born November 16, 1918, at Cedar Creek, Alabama to Glen W. Petcher and Edith White Petcher, one of 7 children. She was married to Sam B. Quimby. Dorothy attended Mobile County schools and graduated from Bridgewater College in Virginia in 1939. She also earned graduate degrees in counseling and supervision from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Dorothy enjoyed an illustrious career in the Mobile County School District for 37 years. During that time, she served as classroom teacher, guidance counselor and supervisor. The last 20 years, she was head of the Title I program for Mobile County. This position allowed her to mentor teachers and provide supplemental instruction to under-performing children in the classroom. She retired in 1987. Affectionately known as “Aunt Dot” to friends as well as her family, she was an inspiration to all for her caring manner, her sharp mind and active spirit. Dorothy greatly enjoyed traveling with her brothers and sisters to destinations around the world. Active in the Cedar Creek Church of the Brethren in Citronelle, a church founded by her father, she served in many capacities. She sang in the choir, served on numerous committees, and even filled in from the pulpit. Left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Penny Quimby of Mobile; a brother, Paul Petcher of Chatom; a sister, Joyce P. Cline of Staunton, VA; grandchildren, Alan Quimby (Kathy) of Staunton, VA and Laura Quimby-Coleman (Dave) of Gaithersburg, Maryland; 5 great-grandchildren – Betsy and Ryan Quimby and Andrew, Adam and Derek Quimby-Coleman; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents as well as her husband, Sam; a son, Tommy; 2 brothers, Rhett and Harold; and 2 sisters, Helen P. Stanford and Shirley P. Wilkerson. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 25 at Cedar Creek Church of the Brethren from 2:00 P.M. with a Celebration of Life service following at 3:00 P.M with Rev. Richard Petcher, Rev. Steven Petcher, Rev. Veronica Barnes and Rev. Keith Brannon officiating. The family would like to extend special appreciation to her caregivers, Mildred Owens, Cynthia Fennell, Ernestine Grimes, Youlanda Singleton, Jeanette Felder and Peggy Oertel for their loving care of Dorothy during her illness.
