Eleanor (Ms. Lee) was born in Tygart Valley, West Virginia to Elton and Lena Sipes on Feb 6, 1941. She married Philip Herr January 19, 1969 at Locust Grove Church near New Lisbon, Indiana. She was a loving wife, caring mother, and homemaker. In addition, she served beside Phil as pastors’ wife and Sunday School teacher. Their ministry began in Indiana at Nettle Creek Friends Meeting, near Hagerstown Indiana. Later, they moved to Oklahoma as stateside missionaries with The Associated Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs, to the indigenous people of the Seneca Cayuga Nation in Wyandotte, Oklahoma. Lee was involved with the women’s group, youth group, and annual camps of local and statewide Quaker youth.
Together Phil and Lee moved to Alabama and founded The MOWA Choctaw Friends Center, near McIntosh, AL. While there she was the principal of The Friends School and worked closely with the community in educational, relief, and church projects. For the last approximately 25 years of their active ministry, they served the Oak Hill Community Church (Baptist) in the Sanktown communinty.
Lee worked as camp cook both in Oklahoma and at Camp Whispering Pines, in Citronelle, Alabama. She opened their home to help underserved youth receive an education in specialized programs. A very talented artist, she painted in all mediums and received high marks at the university level. She was also a weaver and crafter. Always enthralled with local flowers, she enjoyed attending annual flower shows each year.
Lee is survived by her Husband, Philip Herr; her four children: Craig (Beth) Herr, Ann (Timothy) Kendall, Joe (Sandy) Herr, Ben (Suzanne) Herr; her sister, Sue (Donald) Lewis; seventeen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elton and Lena Sipes.
You are encouraged to leave a message in the guestbook below to share your most precious memories, thoughts, and condolences for the family of Eleanor.
Lee’s request was that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to ( www.cams-haiti-revis.com ), a well drilling project for life giving water in Haiti, where Lee visited many times. She loved the people of Haiti.
