Gaines H. Turner, Jr. a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away on March 2, 2025, at the age of 87. He was born on January 27, 1938, and lived a life marked by warmth, kindness, and a profound sense of community. He was known for his easy-going personality and laid-back demeanor, entirely comfortable in every social setting, as he never met a stranger.
Gaines served his country with honor in the United States Army for four years, a commitment that instilled in him a lifelong love for his nation and its values. His military service was a source of pride and shaped his character, which mirrored the principles of loyalty and respect he carried throughout his life.
A dedicated family man, Gaines was immensely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He fostered many friendships and valued the relationships he built over the years, often reminiscing with his retired friends during their gatherings. His interests included hunting, cattle farming, and a commitment to giving back to the community, reflected in his active membership in the American Legion Post 164.
Gaines is survived by his loving children, David D. Turner (Bridgett) and Catherine Lynn Turner. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Andrew Turner (Leslie), Shelby Wells (Brentley), Edward Turner (Miranda), and Elizabeth Hobbs (John), and he adored his thirteen great-grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family, he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will miss his gentle spirit and infectious smile.
He was preceded in death by his son, Chris Turner; his parents, Gaines and Mary Turner; and his beloved siblings: Emmaline Stewart, Noel Turner, Mary Ann Williams, Ona Mae Mathis, and Wilhelmena Prine.
A visitation will be held at Freeman Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 11:00 AM until the 12:00 PM funeral service with Bro. Marcus Hobbs officiating.
Gaines's legacy of kindness and love for family and friends will continue to resonate in the lives he touched.
