Geneva Ann McWain, lovingly known as Ann and affectionately called Annie by her grandchildren, passed away peacefully at home in Satsuma, Alabama, on April 11, 2025. She was 69 years old and surrounded by family at the time of her passing.
Ann was born on December 17, 1955, in Mobile, Alabama, to the late Mr. Howard Smith, Sr. and Mrs. Connie (Saffen) Smith, who survives her. Her early years were spent in Eight Mile, and she was a proud graduate of the University of Mobile’s Class of 1978, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. In 1981, Ann married her husband, Ken McWain. They shared three children, a life full of love, hard work, and deep faith.
Early in her career, Ann taught at two schools within the Mobile County Public School System, spending most of her years as a physical education teacher at Robert E. Lee Elementary. She retired from the school system in 1994 and later worked alongside her husband as co-owner and operator of Quality Cleaners.
Ann lived most of her life in Saraland, Alabama, and she and Ken recently moved to Satsuma prior to their retirement. She was an active member of Redemption Church, where she volunteered in the children’s ministry and taught Sunday School to second graders for many years. Her heart for service and joyful spirit touched countless lives.
Ann’s love for the outdoors was a defining part of her life. She cherished peaceful mornings on her back porch with a cup of coffee and her Bible study, and found joy in bicycling—especially when shared with her husband. She will be remembered as kind, strong, loving, generous, and deeply devoted to her faith and her family. Ann was a blessing to all who had the great opportunity to know her.
Ann is survived by her husband, Ken McWain; her children, Judson (Kristy) McWain, Ashley (Michael) Munday, and Leslie Ann (Reid) Jones; her grandchildren, Briggs Howard McWain and Landry Reese McWain; her mother, Connie Smith; and her brother, Howard Smith, Jr. (Emma). She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces, Jamie (James) Dykes and Leigh Ann Havens, and her great-nephews, Maddox Dykes, Davis Dykes, and Branch Wilson—each of whom she treasured as part of her immediate family—as well as extended family and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Redemption Church, 1251 Industrial Parkway, Saraland, AL 36571. A celebration of life will take place at the church the following morning, Wednesday, April 16, at 10:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Smith Family Cemetery, 10163 Kali Oka Road, Eight Mile, 36613
In remembrance of Ann’s life and love, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to Redemption Church (1251 Industrial Parkway, Saraland, AL 36571) or Bayou Community Food Bank (c/o Bayou Sara Baptist Church, 12 Bayou Avenue, Saraland, AL 36571).
Ann fought bravely against glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) for six months. Though her absence leaves a deep ache, we rejoice in knowing she is no longer in pain—fully at peace, and united in heaven with God.
