James Lofton, "Red," a native and resident of Mount Vernon, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was 91 years old. Red was born March 29, 1928 to Martha and Albert Lofton, the oldest brother of eight children. He worked as a boilermaker for the Alabama Dry Docks Shipyard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Lofton; son, Dewayne Lofton; daughter, Christine Orso; brothers, Otis, Douglas, and Adrian Lofton; and sister, Dale Byrd.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son, James Jr. (Helen) Lofton; daughter, Johnny V Reed; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; thirty-one great great grandchildren; and one great great great grandchild. He is also survived by his sisters, Rosie "Bea" Rivers, Annie Weaver, and Ginny Byrd; a host of nieces and nephews; and his special cousin, Crany Lofton.
He was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. He loved to laugh and cherished the company of family and friends. The family will receive friends from 10am until the 11am Mass of the Resurrection on Friday, August 9, 2019, with Rev. John Coghlan, celebrant. Burial will follow in Byrd Cemetery.
