James Newton Straughn, 79, a resident of Orange Beach, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at South Baldwin Regional Hospital in Foley, Alabama. James served in the United States National Guard and later retired from both Radcliff Materials and Tom Thumb Convenient Stores. He was of the Episcopalian faith and enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting. James was extremely family oriented. He loved spending time with his grandchildren; teaching them to drive, swim, and do all things water related. He was also quite the story teller and got a kick out of scaring his grandchildren with his tall tales. He spent his afternoons walking or driving around with his two dogs, Chili and Dixie. James was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Clara Straughn. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 61 years, Sandra Straughn; children, Stephanie Botkin, Elizabeth Davis (Mark), and Jamie Smith (John); grandchildren, Jonathan Smith (Anna), Christopher Davis (Annalise), Amanda Henderson, Jarrod Smith, Allie Botkin, Jordan Smith, Hunter Botkin (Maddy), and Jilli Smith; seven great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. The family will be having a private memorial service for James at a later date. Online condolences may be given at www.freemancitronelle.com. Freeman Funeral Home – Citronelle, Alabama
