John A. "Red" Gartman

March 3, 1936 — September 22, 2013

John A. "Red" Gartman, 77, of Mount Vernon, AL, died Sunday, September 22, 2013 in healthcare facility. Red loved the town of Mount Vernon where he served on the Mount Vernon Town Council from 1970-1976 and as Mayor of Mount Vernon from 1976-1992. He was loved by his family and friends and touched their lives in a special way. He was the very best Pa Pa EVER to John, Ashley and Stephanie. What sweet memories we will all cherish. Red was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Alice O'Guynn Gartman; parents, Cecil and Mamie Gartman; brothers, Donald Gartman, Harold Gartman, Kenneth Gartman. Survivors include children, Robert (Kathy) Gartman, Cathy Gartman (Andrew) Tarver; grandchildren, John Gartman, Stephanie Tarver, Ashley (Nathan) Donald; brother, David (Predeta) Gartman; sister, Eunice Green; brother-in-law Robert (Gail) O'Guynn; sister-in-law, Ann Gartman; other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends Saturday, September 28, 2013, at Lockler Memorial Baptist Church from 9am until the 11am funeral service. Graveside service to follow in the afternoon at Turnerville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lockler Memorial Baptist Church Youth Group - P.O. Box 39 Mount Vernon, Alabama 36560.
