Reverend John Gregory Helveston, known to many as Brother Johnny, a lifelong resident of Charity Chapel, Alabama, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on May 25, 2022. He was 72 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Rosa Lee Helveston, brother Tim Helveston, sister Rose Ann Turner, and grandson Lil' Jeffrey Broadwater. Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 51 years, Gail; daughters Deanna (Chris) and Jennifer; sons Ronnie (Susan) and Daniel (April); 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren: sisters Joyce Graves and Charlotte West (Mack).
He was a retired Operator of 32 years at Mobile Pulley and Machine Works. Brother Johnny was a devoted pastor to Full Gospel Tabernacle for 31 years who devoted his life to the service of his community. He was a lifetime member of the church and gave his heart to Christ 48 years ago. He served his church and community in many ways including cemetery caretaker, 21-year volunteer fire department Chaplin and mentoring youth for several years. There were many who benefited from his generous spirit and loyal friendship. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed playing baseball, loved watching western movies and keeping the weatherman honest.
The family will receive visitors at Freeman Funeral Home on Saturday, 28 May from 6-9 pm. Services will be held at Full Gospel Tabernacle on Sunday, 29 May at 11 am, conducted by Reverend Doug Fairchild, Brother Mike Reid and Brother Teddy Hunter. Internment will immediately follow at the Helveston Family Cemetery.
