John Raymond Nell, a resident of Knollwood Point Assisted Living went to be with his Lord on May 6, 2014 while holding the hand of his son, Cliff. Born August 31, 1923, he lived 90 years .
While living in Cleveland, Ohio, he followed his older brother to New York where they joined the United States Army together. A World War II veteran, he was awarded the distinguished Infantry Medal of Honor, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster while serving in the Philippines. He went on to serve a special mission in Japan defending the Palace of Emperor Tito.
Preceding him in death was the beloved mother of his children, Marion Nell H. Nell and a son, John Gilbert Nell. He is survived by two sons, Charles Clifford Nell, Mobile and Lawrence Hayes Nell, Atlanta, a daughter, Sheila (Michael) Crim and grandson, Matthew S. Stringer, Mobile.
Affectionately known as Cecil or J. R. by his friends, many years of his life were spent as a farmer and a cattleman. He was happiest in the hayfields or sitting on his front porch visiting with friends. He was a member of New Home Baptist Church.
His family expresses heartfelt gratitude to special friends and caregivers at Knollwood Point Assisted Living with special appreciation to Gary Hudson, Gloria Barnett, Vanessa Cook and Dr. Martin Lester.
