Leona Gayle Long, 76, a native and resident of Mount Vernon, AL died February 8, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Lufkin, TX. She retired from Searcy Hospital Police Department after 25 years, working through the ranks from officer to chief on the police force. She was a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #68. Gayle was a faithful member of Cedar Creek Holy Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents, Duke and Doris Simison, husband, Thomas Long and granddaughter Lexi Long. She is survived by her children, Randy Long (Denise) of Haslet, TX., Greg Long (Paula) of Turnerville, AL., Pam Nix (Kevin) of Lufkin, TX. and Melissa Landrum (David) of Saraland, AL.; grandchildren, Justin Long (Jamie), Courtney Abbey (Dean), Jamie Scoggins (Katie), Mackenzie Long, Austin Nix, Josh Nix, Andrew Landrum and Jacob Landrum; great grandchildren, Callie, Stella and Mary Lillian; sisters, Alice Rutland (Jimmy); Dianne Murphy, Peggy Dunagan, Linda Robbins, Joyce Walker (Donnie) and Susanne Harrell (Gene); numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 11am until the 1pm funeral service at Freeman Funeral Home with Rev. Darius Templeton and Rev. Dallas Lakes officiating. Pallbearers will be Justin Long, Jamie Scoggins, Austin Nix, Josh Nix, Andrew Landrum and Jacob Landrum. Interment will be in Mount Vernon Community Cemetery in Mount Vernon, AL.
