Magdeline Weaver Schaffer, our mama and Nana, was welcomed into her Heavenly home Saturday, August 21, 2021, after battling cancer for 10 months. She was 79 years old. She went peacefully surrounded by her loving family, close friends, and compassionate caregivers at SAAD Hospice facility. Mag, as she was known by family and friends, was born January 3, 1942, to Hiram and Sallie Weaver in Mt. Vernon, Alabama, where she grew up. There, she met and fell in love with her husband of 47 years, Daniel Schaffer of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, while he was on a weekend pass with a friend from the Navy. They married and raised a family of eight children and also had a hand in raising a few other children.
Mag was a lifelong member of Saint Theresa Catholic Church, and her beautiful soul and heart full of love professed her faith daily. She and Dan raised their family to be devoted Christians and their light will continue to shine through them.
Throughout her life, Mag enjoyed doing many things. Decorating for every holiday made her very happy, and she did it religiously, from New Years to Christmas and every holiday in between. At Christmas time, she lit the sky with her lights and decorations. She loved to take trips with her family, especially her husband when he drove cross country on an 18 wheeler; she loved getting pampered and making sure her hair was always fixed and her outfits were always coordinated; and most of all, she loved the large gatherings with her family laughing and sharing stories. She had a very large family, and never met a stranger. In fact, if she sat and talked with you long enough, she would tell you how you were kin to her before you left. She loved everybody like her own family and the community will not be the same without her.
Mag was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Louis Schaffer, Sr.; parents, Hiram and Sallie Weaver; grandson, Richard Wayne “Rick Rick” Sullivan, JR.; siblings, Sterling Weaver, Josiah Weaver, Louise Rivers, Sophia Lofton, Irene Weaver, and Marie Sullivan; and special dear friends, Bonnie Rivers and Lillie Weaver. There is a rejoicing reunion in Heaven today.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Daniel L. Schaffer, Jr. (Karen), Loretta Sullivan (Richard), Vicki Schaffer (James Hysell), Frank Schaffer (Gwen), Wallace Schaffer (Trisha), Charles “Chuck” Schaffer (Angel), Willie Schaffer, and Eva Schaffer (Stacey New); grandchildren, Shane (Karla), Julia “Noot”, Marlee, James Daniel, Val (Allie), Daniel “Danny” (Farrah), Laura, Mitch (Karen), Katelyn, Adam, Wallace, Jr. (Chantille), Jack, Brannon, TJ, Stella, Krystal, Tiffany “T-Bone”, Amanda, Mallory, Kaley (Asia), Isabella, Paige, Baylee, Fallon, Willie, Jr., Kiera, Conner, Easton, Maggie , and Peyton; great-grandchildren, Karlee, Coy, Jr., Karis, Karson, Lil Shane, Easton, Nick, Daniel “Mac Mac”, Dreyton, McKinley “Daisy Mae”, Sam , Kaydin, Karter, Alysse, and one on the way; brother, Darby Weaver; sister, Levert Lofton (Bill); special nieces and nephews that she raised like her own, William Hollis (Cathy), Nick Byrd, Tex Byrd, Jr. (Deborah), Charles Weaver “Charlie Brown”, Octavia “Toot” Collins (Chad), Willie Lofton (Candice), and Toni Byrd; special nieces that were her best friends, Martha Evans and Darbina Weaver; dear friend, Michelle Lofton; and other loving family and countless friends.
