William T. (Ted) Newberry, age 94, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Springhill Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Citronelle, Alabama, member of First Presbyterian Church of Citronelle (serving as elder and Sunday School superintendent), charter member of Citronelle Kiwanis Club for 66 years and retired owner of Newberry's Department Store (46 years). He served his country from 1943 to 1946 in the United States Army 10th Corps in the South Pacific Theater in World War II. He also served five terms on the Citronelle City Council and was past president of the Mobile County Gas Board, member of the Citronelle Volunteer Fire Department, Citronelle Rescue Unit, Citronelle Industrial Board, Advisory Director of Merchants National Bank and Advisor of Boy Scout Explorer Post 33. He was known for growing some of the best tomatoes in town. He enjoyed fishing and boating with his family at his beach house on Bon Secour Bay near Fort Morgan. Mr. Newberry was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Nellie Newberry; wife, Virginia Newberry; wife, Frances Newberry; and brother, Ralph Newberry. He is survived by his sons, Bill (Susan) Newberry and Tom (Marianne) Newberry; grandchildren, Crystal Fenning, Daniel Newberry, Hayley Newberry, Brent Newberry, Lee Shanklin, Amy Shanklin, and Loren Fleshman; great grandchildren, Laura Cate and Raine Fenning; extended family and many friends. The Wake will be from 6-9 pm Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Freeman Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1 pm until the 2 pm Funeral Service on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church of Citronelle with Rev. Dr. Ron Stone officiating.
