Rachel Amelia Sullivan, a beloved member of her community and a cherished matriarch of her family, passed away on December 30, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 30, 1939, she touched the lives of many through her acts of kindness and unyielding faith.
For over 30 years, Mama Rachel served as the owner/operator of OC's Quickstop, where her warm presence made the establishment a hub for locals. Additionally, she dedicated 25 years to her role as a bookkeeper for Sullivan Timber, demonstrating her strong work ethic and commitment to her community.
Mama Rachel was a Godly woman, strong in her faith, which was evident in her active participation as a faithful member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Her spirituality guided her daily life and inspired those around her.
A devoted family woman, Mama Rachel found great joy in the company of her children: Ouida Atchison (Wendell), Arnold Sullivan (Tammy), Amy Byrd (Dennis), Connie Gerald (Tripp), and Amanda Hill (Scoot). She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Lindsey, Kristian (Matt), Matthew, Mallory, Arnold, Jr. (Katie), Dexter (Christina), Blaine, Emily, Kyler, and Avery, as well as her great-grandchildren, Brooks, Ella Briggs, Rylee, Tucker, Bennett, Weston, Wyatt, Wrenley, and Brystol. Mama Rachel often expressed immense pride in her family, frequently attending their activities and functions, supporting them wholeheartedly.
Mama Rachel was blessed with siblings who will remember her fondly: Ann Carter, Anna Taylor (Armond), and Linda Prine (Leonard), along with her sister-in-law, Donna Rivers (Stevie). The loss of her husband, Opie Sullivan, her parents, Michael and Elizabeth Johnston, her siblings, Mame, Prince, Esther, Martha, Sam, and J.W., and her granddaughter-in-law, Courtney is held dear in her memory by many.
An amazing cook with a passion for shopping and spending time at her beach house, Mama Rachel embraced life to the fullest. Her legacy is one of love, strength, and devotion, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at Mount Moriah Baptist Church on January 4, 2025, from 10:30 AM until the 12:00 PM funeral service with Bro. Ronnie Toomey and Bro. Eddie Stringfellow officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery.
