Richard Albert Johnston, a beloved husband, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on September 23, 2024, at the age of 66. Born on October 1, 1957, Richard lived a life characterized by dedication, kindness, and a profound sense of community.
Richard devoted 20 years to his career as a Transportation Engineer, contributing significantly to the infrastructure of Alabama. He also served as the Fire Chief for Charity Chapel for an impressive 15 years, underscoring his commitment to public service and safety. Over a remarkable span of 35 years, Richard's efforts have left an indelible mark on the state of Alabama, where he was respected and admired by many.
His easygoing nature and boundless kindness endeared him to everyone he met. Richard had a unique ability to see goodness in people, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He found joy in raising cows and cherished the companionship of his dogs. An avid deer hunter, he loved spending time in nature, often accompanied by family and friends. Above all, Richard treasured the moments he spent with his loved ones, making memories that will live on in their hearts.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Rita Johnston; his brother, Thomas Johnston, Jr. (Teresa); his brother-in-law, Paul Reid; his sister-in-law, Denise Johnston; and his nieces and nephews, Kris Coburn, William Reid, Matthew Johnston, Jarrod Johnston, Jessica DeWald and Bart Johnston. Richard also leaves behind many other relatives and friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and June Johnston, and his brother, Robert "Bobby" Johnston.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until the 11:30 AM funeral service held at Full Gospel Tabernacle on Friday, September 27, 2024 with Rev. Mike Reid officiating. Burial will follow in Charity Chapel Cemetery.
Richard Albert Johnston will be remembered as a compassionate and gentle soul, whose legacy of kindness and service will continue to inspire those who knew him.
