Robert Leon Jefferson, Sr. died Monday February 1, 2010 in Fairhope, AL after a brief illness. He was born July 29, 1922 in Irvington, Alabama to Alfred and Lillian Jefferson, who along with eight brothers and sisters preceded him in death. He married Irene Boothe, who also preceded him in death in 1993. He grew up in Mobile during the Great Depression, attended Barton Academy and enlisted in the Army in 1942, where he served in five major European battles including the Battle of the Bulge. After World War 11 he returned to the Mobile area where he managed several businesses. From 1975 to 2002, he ran the Fly Creek Fish Market, where folks from all over the Eastern Shore came to purchase fresh fish, crabs and seafood ``off the boat" - During the past few years, he worked tirelessly as a volunteer for the Fairhope Cat Coalition, helping with cat feeding, veterinary transport, fundraising and his favorite, fostering cats and kittens awaiting adoption. In recognition of 10 years of service, he received a Life Time Achievement award for his dedication to homeless felines. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Robert Leon Jefferson Jr., of Houston TX., his brother, John Jefferson of Mobile, AL, his wife, Mary Lee Jefferson of Fairhope AL and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. ``Bob's" thought for us is always work hard and lend a hand to those in need.
