Virginia Ruth Vann Landrum

October 8, 1934 — October 23, 2022

Virginia Ruth Vann Landrum, 88, a resident of Peachtree City, Georgia, passed peacefully at home under the care of Southern Grace Hospice, October 23, 2022.

The second child and oldest daughter in a family of 12 children born in Waynesboro, MS, on October 8, 1934, to the late Johnnie Mose Vann, a businessman, and Hettie Lucy Bagby Vann, an educator. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband; The Reverend Doctor Charles Logan Landrum, Jr.; her son, Charles Logan Landrum, III; her brothers, Frank Montgomery Vann, Charles Debroh Vann, and John Robert Vann; her sisters, Vivian Josephine Chateau and Mary Lucy Prine.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Landrum Soper (Alan); her son, David Anderson Landrum (Mary Ann); three grandchildren, Madeleine Miller Landrum (Ben Gallagher), Charles Logan Landrum, IV, and Wade Landrum; three sisters, Elizabeth Alice Vann Green (Gabriel), Rebecca Sue Vann Ludwig (Thomas), and Dorothy Vann Kerr (John); brothers, James Fulman Vann (Janie), Ossie D Vann (Beverly), and Fred Emerson Vann (Deborah); many nieces and nephews.

Virginia attended Belhaven College then earned her undergraduate degree in Music Education with a certification in elementary education from the University of Southern Mississippi. She earned graduate degrees from both William and Mary College and from WV School of Graduate Studies, a part of WVU at that time, that had the only National Association of School Psychologists certified program in WV.

Over time, Virginia taught upper elementary grades several years, served as an elementary principal for 5 years, and worked in the mental health field 5 years as a liaison and consultant with the school system. For the last 19 years of her career of her career, she had a succession of assignments in the Rudolph County, WV, schools as a facilitator in development of special education programs, and serving as Director of Special Education.

Virginia has always felt strongly about investing her time, talents, and values. She became a Master Gardner Volunteer, a Consulting Rosarian with the American Rose Society, a Rotarian, American Association of University Women, a member of PEO, which is a philanthropic and educational organization that raises money to provide scholarships, grants, and loans to women, and has been active in her churches. Virginia worked tirelessly to create positive change in every life she could, family or not. She was the beacon of integrity, grace, and fortitude who actively stood against racism during the beginnings of the Civil Rights Movement and devoted countless hours to feeding people without food. She took a role in eliminating Polio globally as well as combating Human Trafficking. She, also, beat cancer on several occasions. She was a wonderful role model.

A memorial service in Peachtree City and graveside services in Citronelle, AL, will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charles Logan Landrum, III, Memorial Fund at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, Elkins, WV, 26241, or to First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City, 206 Willowbend Road, Peachtree City, GA 30263.
